By the end of this year, more than 20,000 people across the U.S. will be eligible for driverless vehicles, according to a study released Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
That’s up from just 3,000 at this point last year.
The number of people applying for jobs in the field has also skyrocketed from just 10,000 last year to more than 50,000 in 2018.
In 2018, a whopping 45 percent of the people who applied for driver’s licenses, permits, or certificates to drive were either new drivers or graduates of driver’s training programs.
And in 2018, an astounding 71 percent of those who applied were also newly minted drivers or graduated from driver’s education programs.
The National Highway Safety Administration released a study on the growth of driverless car jobs last year, noting that the number of jobs available for new drivers has risen by more than 400 percent.
In 2017, the total number of new drivers was just 5,000.
The new jobs that have opened up for people with driver’s disabilities, who were previously denied jobs because of a disability, has also soared.
The percentage of newly minteds with driver-assistance systems has increased from 6.9 percent in 2017 to 19.1 percent in 2018 according to NHTSA.
And the number in the United States with a disability has nearly doubled to 4.9 million since last year as the number with a disabling condition has grown.
“There are thousands of people who have never been to a golf course before and are now able to do so for the first time, so we can focus on driving safely,” said Jason Cramer, a vice president with the National Association of Driver Educators (NADA).
“The NADA has been working to expand driver education to people with disabilities and the National Driver Register and National Driver Training Registry are just starting to expand.
But for people who need help getting licensed to drive, these opportunities are great.”
In addition to the more than 200 new jobs for newly mintees, the NADA reports that the average driver has now been driving for more than three years.
The NADA also noted that, as of September 2018, the number who were actively seeking work for driver-education and driver-training jobs had more than tripled from last year and that more than 80 percent of new jobs are based in states that require driver licenses.
But NADA’s Jason Cramers analysis of the jobs available in the U!
shows that there are also plenty of people working in driver’s safety courses that are driving safe and doing their part to help make our roads safer.
“The number of positions at drivers safety courses has increased dramatically since we began to publish our study last year,” said Cramer.
“We are seeing more than 10,500 people apply for driver safety courses across the country, and more than 40 percent of them are new applicants or graduates.”
This year, the median salary for an NADA-certified driver is just over $35,000, and the median driver is working with a driver-safety course that can handle up to eight drivers.
NADA is now working with more than 500 state and local governments across the United State to recruit and train more qualified drivers and instructors to work in driver safety training courses.
In addition, NADA, the National Council of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and other safety organizations are helping to promote driver safety through their efforts to expand the use of GPS, adaptive cruise control, and driverless technology.
The national organization, NHTSS, recently launched the Driver Safety Challenge, a drive to get more people to get driver’s license or permit requirements and pass an advanced driver safety course.
