The author of the best-selling How to Get Rich, who also happens to be a great speaker, is now helping the world learn how to get rich from learning how to teach.
The former hedge fund manager, who spent four decades working for Goldman Sachs, was honored for his contributions to the field with a lifetime achievement award at the New York Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Sunday.
Here are six of his top tips to become a better speaker.
Learn to talk over yourself.
You need to get comfortable with the idea that you’re not the only one in the room.
I always tell people, you are a writer.
You are a speaker.
And so if you’re a writer, you know, I’m not a great writer, but I’m a great reader, a great conversationalist, a better teacher.
I’m really good at getting in there and making the audience feel good about themselves.
It’s not a good thing to say to them, “I’m not good at this.”
But, if you want to be really good, you have to learn to do it.
You have to become like the person who talks over himself.
So I don’t like to say, “You know, the person next to me is really good.
I can’t do this.”
It’s better to just say, I can do this.
If you can’t make them feel good, they’re not going to be listening.
It helps if you can do it in a way that makes them feel confident and that they’re in control.
That’s where I think most people fail.
And I think that’s where we’re going.
The trick is to really take control.
So, for example, I don’ actually think that being a good writer or a good speaker is going to make me any more good at it than someone who’s not great at it.
So you have got to be able to do that.
You just have to understand what it takes to do this job and be able, at the end of the day, to get them to take responsibility for themselves.
The key to that is to be willing to learn, and to take ownership.
It takes a lot of self-awareness, and it takes a certain kind of openness to take charge.
That takes a bit of trust.
If people trust you, and they’re confident that you can take charge of your own life, they’ll do whatever it takes.
They’ll have a higher probability of doing it.
It just takes that.
I think a lot, especially in the financial world, it’s been all about the trust.
People have been so worried about it that people can’t even do the basics of life.
And when they’re making big mistakes, and you’re going to lose the trust of them, it can actually be really devastating.
And you can learn from it.
That really comes out in what you do in your job.
And if you just stay focused, you can make a lot more of an impact than you think.
Don’t waste time trying to figure out who you are or what your value is.
There are thousands of people out there who don’t want to hear anything.
You’ve got to have some humility about yourself.
And the way to do is to just do it, and then do it right.
It can be as simple as a conversation about your own value and your own journey, and that will give you confidence and get you out there and be productive and inspire.
That will help you build more relationships and make more money.
And then you can actually help your audience.
And that’s what I mean when I say that people are attracted to the most talented and most passionate people.
You can do all kinds of things with them, but the most powerful thing is to take them on.
